About
Mountain Biking is a great sport and if you can ride a bike then you can go mountain biking !!
The bikes are differnet than you normal push bike or road bik in that they are built and geared for off-road riding. You can still ride them on the road but you would be wasting a great opportunity.
MOUNTAIN BIKES ARE NOT JUST FOR MOUNTAINS!
you can literally rid them wherever you want to go but where you could not ride a normal bike or road bike because the terrain is just too rugged and you would lose control or you would constantly get flats due obstacles etc that you would hit on the trail. You ride mountain bikes on the flat, or relatively flat, such as along forest trails or a trail across fields where any other bike would fear to tread.
Basically a mountain bike is just a go anywhere bike that you ride uphill or downhill or cross-country. They have wider tires to give you the control and protection you need when riding fast off-road and they a built to be sturdier to cope with more aggressive riding over rough terrain. Most will have a front suspension fork built in to the bike to soften the blow from hitting rigdes or tree roots etc as you fly along at speed and many also a suspension unit at the back to make your ride even more confortable over rough ground.
Many also come with disk brakes to enable you stop quicker and with more control on down hills and sharp turns. Overall they are a bike built for anything you can through at them and once you ride one you will have the time of your life as you will be able to do things on a bike that you have never done before. And as the confidence builds you will soon find yourself wanting to try out more and more things to challenge yourself and basically just to have more fund.
Get the right mountain bike for you size and initiall ability and with the right mountain biking clothes and protective equipement if you need it you will be good to go. Hydaration and warmth are the two things to worry about when out on the trails so always take liquids and extra outer layers with you and of course tools, spares and a pump to enure you can get back if you have a flat without walking all the way.
If you haven’t tried mountain biking yet, now is the time! The bikes are better and safer than they have ever been and keen compettition between manufactures means many mountain bikes are very affordable and give good value for money.
GO MOUNTAN BIKING !
