All You Need To Know About Buying A Mountain Bike

It can often be more than a bit frustrating as well as extremely time consuming when you want to buy a mountain bike.  Here you’ll find some great tips and things you should be aware of before you pay out your hard-earned cash and buy your new mountain bike.

What Type Of Mountain Bike Do You Need?

Remember that mountain bikes are all designed for a few different rider styles and ground terrain types.  You’ll need to determine what type of riding you will be doing and get a bike to match.

You might want to do smooth surface riding mainly on roads, participate in cross country bike racing, maybe focus on mountain cruising or more extreme downhill only tracks.

There is a lot to choose from, but if your are just starting out as a mountain biker then go for a cross country bike before you know how good you are.

Just make sure that the mountain bike you choose fits in with your personal preference and do not be taken in by the advice the sale’s staff who will tend to steer you in the direction of the bikes they will make the most profit on.

Do You Want A Full Suspension Bike Or MTB Hard Tail?

If you can afford to pay for it go for a full suspension mountain bike as it is always worth the price.  If you buy a hard tail which does not have rear suspension you will find it is much lighter weight and you will be able to pedal it more efficiently.

Buy personally I would always go for full suspensions as it just offers so much more comfort and better control on rough terrain.  It’s your choice though!

You should make you final decision based on your own individual price range, bike preference and where you’ll be riding on the most, wherever it is.

What’s Your Price?

Pixmac000001990729To be honest there is actually no limit as to how much of your own money you can spend on a brand  new mountain bike. If you want to help yourself  keep your bike spending under some sort of control, you should try and figure out what exactly your price range is and how much you are comfortably willing to pay for your new mountain bike.

When you start thinking of buying ignore all the big sports stores and find a specialist supplier.  You should always try and support your local bike shop if you have and travel a little further to find one if yo don’t.

A local bike dealer will give you a better bike and provide better service because they will know what they are doing whereas a big store will not.

Do As Much Bike Research As You Can

Do all you research! Component reviews and mountain bike reviews are just about the best way to find out about a particular mountain bike’s real reliability and performance specification.  If possible go online and read bike magazines and look at what other owners are saying and read as many reviews as possible and then think hard about your chosen bike before you finally pay over your cash.

Mountain Bike Prices Change With The Seasons

As with any seasonal product you will find that during the year, the actual prices of most mountain bikes will fluctuate and change quite a bit.  Usually the spring and summer months are the main buying season for mountain bikes as that’s when beginners get into the sport.

If you can possibly wait and be patient until the price is right for you which will normally occur in the fall and during winter you should be able to save a couple of hundred dollars or so on your new bike.  Many of the bike shops will also offer additional discounts and other accessories cheap if you buy your bike from them.

Choosing The Best Components For Your Bike

Trying to compare mountain bikes by the components they use is nearly impossible beacuse there are far just too many different combinations to consider.

The best approach to take when doing this is to decide on which components are the most important to you and then make sure that the rest of the components you get keep your bike within your known price range.

It’s best to start with the more expensive compnentssuch as the fork and then look at the wheel rims and rear derailleur before moving on.

Always Test Ride All Your Top Bike Choices

You should always take the time to test ride as many different mountain bikes, of the type that you want, as you can within your chosen price range.  You’ll definitely find that some of the bikes will feel ok and others won’t. Hopefully one of them will feel great!

The more mountain bikes you can test drive in a short spave of time the better you’ll get a feel for what works for you and what does not.

How To Find The Best Mountain Bike Dealer

This is important! Finding a good bike dealer is essential and to be honest is more important than actually finding the best price.  Always try to find a dealer that really cares more about selling you a bike taht is perfect for than just selling you the one at the highest price.

Have a hose around a their shop and remember that a  great dealer will have always have a really clean repair shop. You also need to make sure that they give you the impression that you can trust them as you will be relying on a lot of the advice they give.

When you find the best dealer and the best prices and they have the mountain bike of your dreams in stock you are on to winner…

Go buy that bike!
